The Bucket Budgeting System

Personal finance is one of my favorite topics so naturally I’m very interested in the crossover between budgeting and buckets – the bucket budgeting system!

It’s a simple system designed for people who are adopting a budget and savings plan for the first time. The bucket budgeting system works like this:

Several savings accounts, as few as 3 or as many as 30, are opened at your bank or credit union. Each savings account represents a single monthly, yearly, or infrequent expense that needs to be budgeted for. Each of these accounts is called a “savings bucket.” Name each account after the expense that it is meant for.

These are just a few of the savings buckets an typical american might create.

Solar Hot Water Heater

Heating water is probably one of the biggest line items on your energy bill. The average American family of 4 in 2012 spent between $250 and $550 that year to heat hot water. A cleverly designed solar hot water system can eliminate 50% to 100% of that cost, depending on usage.

DIY Solar Hot Water Heater

This is the “gateway drug” for heating water with the sun. You can build it yourself, in an afternoon, with 20$ in supplies. After you prove to yourself that indeed this solar hot water thing isn’t snake oil, you can move on to more advanced solar hot water systems.

Sauerkraut at home is just two ingredients – cabbage and salt. But you have to get the right salt, it should say “pickling salt” or “canning salt.” Here’s an example.

You will need something to weigh the sauerkraut down as it ferments. You can use the standard sauerkraut stone disks, or something as simple as a plate weighed down with a gallon jug of water. Continue reading
