There’s dozens of ways people are using 5 gallon buckets to garden these day.
Of course, in any conversation about growing plants, you’ve got to start with compost! There’s several organizations around the U.S and Canada who are using buckets to transport food scraps to compost piles. Many are using bikes to cut costs and reduce emissions.
Numerous plants are being successfully grown in a 5 gallon bucket. Strawberries are one of the most versatile, seen here growing out of sides as well as the top.
One of the most famous gardeners in the world, Mel Bartholomew, is shown here teaching viewers how to grow potatoes in buckets. He’s wrote square foot gardening, so it only makes sense that he’s using a square foot bucket.
Some clever home renters create levitating gardens with their buckets, since they aren’t allowed to dig up the yard. Here’s an entire colony of buckets growing upside down tomatoes. I wonder if they taste any different?
And finally, the best way to use buckets in your gardening efforts are with what’s called a sub-irrigated-planter. That’s a fancy term for self-watering bucket. The guys from global buckets are using sub-irrigated planters to completely automated five gallon bumper crops in Colorado.
